They are offered in both single and double handle styles. Double handle cartridge type faucets work very in the same way to compression valves except with the less extra pressure employed when closing the valve. For single handle cartridge faucets, this also resembles the ball-type valves apart from the flow is controlled by raising or lowering the handle.  These are generally basically the different aspects of a faucet.
